Category:
This original 1998 Tour de France poster features the official race route for the 85th edition of the Tour, presented in a clean, modernist design with vibrant iconography and a stylized blue background. The route map lists the host cities, beginning in Dublin, Ireland, and finishing on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. The colorful symbols down the right side of the poster—a shamrock, sun, mountain flowers, and Arc de Triomphe—represent the journey from the Irish Grand Départ through the varied landscapes of France, culminating in the traditional Parisian finale. The Festina doping scandal famously disrupted the 1998 Tour de France, but it still delivered a dramatic race. Marco Pantani of Italy won the overall classification, completing a historic Giro–Tour double. He was followed by Jan Ullrich (Germany) in second and Bobby Julich (USA) in third. Christophe Rinero (France) claimed the King of the Mountains, while Erik Zabel (Germany) won the Points Classification (green jersey). Despite its controversy, the 1998 Tour is remembered as one of the most eventful and pivotal Tours in modern cycling history. This poster has been archivally and professionally linen-backed. Virtually all original vintage posters of this era were viewed as temporary advertising and were printed on very thin paper. While expensive, linen backing is a conservation method used to mount, stabilize, preserve, and protect vintage posters so they can be displayed or framed without compromising value. This poster is an original first printing, not a reproduction.
